Retirement of addresses in NSW and Queensland

Geoscape has continued to review and retire addresses that were provided by contributors where they are considered to be either: historical and have been replaced by other addresses or are “infill” addresses and focus for the Aug 2024 Release has been in New South Wales where 660 addresses have been retired and Queensland where 440 addresses have been retired. In both cases, the addresses are considered not in use by the community and as such, have been retired and allocated a confidence level of -1.

Retirement of addresses in G-NAF

This release has seen the continuation of the process of retiring addresses where they are considered to be either historical and have been replaced by other addresses or are “infill” addresses. “Infill” addresses being addresses created by contributors to complete a street number sequence, however analysis indicates they are not real-world addresses. In the August 2024 update as part of the improvement process, a further 1180 addresses have been retired (ie NSW 660, QLD 440 & VIC 80).

In the November 2024 update, it is proposed to retire approximately 100,000 addresses based on the same criteria for retiring addresses used over the past 12 months. Given the average increase in G-NAF addresses over the past four updates has been approximately 40,000, this will result in a reduction of the number of “live” addresses in G-NAF. As in previous updates, these retired addresses will remain in G-NAF with a confidence of -1.

An estimate of the retired addresses by State and Territory is in the following table.

Impact of Cadastral shifts in Victoria on address geocodes

As mentioned in previous updates of G-NAF, the spatial upgrade works being undertaken in Victoria are continuing and as a result of the cadastral shifts generated, the geocodes of many addresses related to those parcels have moved.

In the Aug 2024 update, approximately 25,000 address geocodes have been moved. These movements generally range from 1 metre to 40 metres with the majority being around 2 to 7 metres. The highest concentrations of the movements have been in the following LGA’s:

  • Alpine Shire

  • Benalla Rural City

  • Gannawarra Shire

  • Hindmarsh Shire

  • Indigo Shire

  • Mansfield Shire

  • Mount Alexander Shire

  • Northern Grampians Shire

  • Strathbogie Shire

  • Towong Shire

As previously noted in the May 2024 update, in a small number of cases the address geocode has not been moved by the jurisdiction resulting in the address geocode being located in the road casement, and an example of the change is shown below. As explained in the February 2024 release notes, this is limited to addresses with a geocode type of PAPS. It is not known at this time when these geocodes will be moved by the jurisdiction back within the parcel boundaries.
