Overview

Property is a seamless national representation of Australia’s property parcels. Property includes a national polygon representation of property boundaries and their legal identifiers across Australia.

Geoscape welcomes your feedback on the Property product. We also publish regular product development updates on our website (www.geoscape.com.au).

Release Summary

This product was released to customers on 20 November 2023 with data extracted on 13 November 2023.

  • This release is a full national data population for Version 1.0 of the Property product, described by Property Product Guide v1.0.

Any issues that have been identified for this release are described in the Issues section.

Change Notifications

Release frequency change from quarterly to monthly

From September 2023, the Cadastre and Property datasets have been, and will continue to be, released on a monthly schedule. Some jurisdictions only supply data on a quarterly schedule so updates for these will not occur in every monthly release.

ESRI Shapefile width increase

Commencing with the February 2024 release, the width of numeric fields within Esri Shapefiles will increase by one. This is due to a bug fix in our packaging application. This change only impacts Shapefile metadata, the values and precision remain unchanged.

VIC property_cadastre table count reduction

In Victoria, the record count for the property_cadastre table has reduced by approximately 27,000. This reduction is caused by changes to the jurisdictional data for complex property sites, where proposed and approved cadastre parcels were present. At these sites, where property was previously linked to approved and proposed cadastre, there is now only one link to the approved cadastre present. This is due to the previously proposed cadastre becoming approved and the previously approved cadastre being retired.

This change has not resulted in a reduction in the overall distinct cadastre_pid or property_pid counts in the property_cadastre table.

VIC alignment changes

The state of Victoria is conducting a modernisation of their cadastre data. This includes a realignment of the cadastre parcels that will result in a shift of cadastre parcels. These changes will also result in shifts within property boundaries. For further information on the areas that have undergone the realignment and the schedule for further areas please see https://land.vic.gov.au/maps-and-spatial/spatial-data/updates-to-vicmap

New data download portal

We’re pleased to announce the launch of our new customer collaboration portal called Geoscape Hub ( https://hub.geoscape.com.au ).

Geoscape Hub brings the experience for both our dataset and API customers together into one unified platform.

A notification announcing the launch of Geoscape Hub, with instructions on how to access and use the new portal, was sent out to data customers on 13 September. If you did not receive this important communication, please contact our Support team (support@geoscape.com.au).

From 13 September, all users navigating to the ‘Datasets’ page in geoscape.app have been redirected to Geoscape Hub.

Removal of the ‘Documents’ folder from data packages

From November 2023, Geoscape will be progressively moving product descriptions, guides and reports online to https://docs.geoscape.com.au

Commencing with the May 2024 release, data packages will no longer include the Documents folder.

Issues

New Issues

Missing property parcels in South Australia

The SA jurisdiction has retired property parcels across the state that have not been replaced with new parcels. This results in approximately 500 gaps in the property layer in the November 2023 release. The corresponding cadastre parcels for these locations are present, however, there is no link between the two layers as the property records are missing.

If a complete coverage of all property parcels is required, please refer to the October 2023 release of the Property product. However, please note that the property data in the October 2023 release was last updated in July 2023. This is due to ongoing issues with the supplies and we continue to work with the jurisdiction to seek a rectification.

Resolved Issues

No update for ACT Property

There was no update to ACT Property for the previous release due to supplier data issues. These issues have been resolved by the supplier and the new supply of data has been utilised in the November 2023 Property.

No update for SA Property

There was no update to SA Property for the previous release due to supplier data issues. These issues have been resolved by the supplier and the new supply of data has been utilised in the November 2023 Property.

No update for VIC Property

There was no update to VIC Property for the previous release due to supplier data issues. These issues have been resolved by the supplier and the new supply of data has been utilised in the November 2023 Property.

Known Issues

Missing property records in WA

In the August 2023 supply of WA property data, a small number of properties were attributed as no longer active but have not been replaced by new, active records. This has resulted in approximately 440 missing property polygons in Property. We are investigating this issue with the jurisdiction.

Below are some examples for this:

  • 115.77127781,-32.08761319: contributor_id that is no longer active is ‘150305’

  • 115.80779890,-32.04167393: contributor_id that is no longer active is ‘209305’

  • 115.80039925,-32.03670887: contributor_id that is no longer active is ‘181109’

  • 115.758884191,-32.066088752: contributor_id that is no longer active is ‘170052’

Occurrences of overlaps in base property

Overlapping base_property = ‘Yes’ parcels exist in the dataset. These are mostly located in high density residential areas like Adelaide CBD. An example of this can be seen at 138.59832, -34.93268 where there are two base property parcels that have a valid overlap. These parcels are overlapping each other but are not contained by another parcel, so are assigned as base_property = ‘Yes’. These sites relate to valid overlaps in the base layer.

Parcels with the same contributor_id and very similar geometry in SA

In South Australia, there are approximately 250 records with the same contributor_id and with a very similar (but different) geometry. For example, at 138.57227, -34.90376 there are two properties with the same contributor_id of ‘25501810600000’ but with slightly different geometries (property_polygon_pid = ‘ppd19408402744b’ and ‘pp8852442b8bf6b’). This occurs due to floor level impacts in SA. These geometries are essentially the same and we will look to represent these as a single polygon representation in a future release.

QLD property large base parcels under standalone residential parcels

In QLD property it is common at townhouse/unit complexes to have a large base parcel representing the land valuation area of the entire complex, with small parcels overlapping the large base parcel. It has been identified that this is also incorrectly occurring under areas of standalone residential parcels. These parcels are caused due to a production issue where parcels without valuation are entering the product. This will be corrected by removing the large parcels in a future release. Examples of the parcels can be found at 152.77014, -27.64291 or “property_pid” = ‘prpff39d89bd00e’.

Future Considerations

This section outlines enhancements or changes under consideration, but not planned into a specific release. For further details on future initiatives, please contact Geoscape Support.
